Fire restrictions enacted for unincorporated Larimer County

Fire restrictions will go into effect in unincorporated Larimer County starting Wednesday.

The Larimer County commissioners voted unanimously Tuesday morning to enact fire restrictions beginning noon Wednesday for a month — through noon July 29 — at the recommendation of Sgt. Kevin Johnston with the Larimer County Sheriff's Office Emergency Services Unit.

Johnston told the commissioners the low humidity forecast for early this week combined with hot and dry weather leading up to the Fourth of July increases the county's fire danger and means the county meets the criteria for enacting fire restrictions.

"We haven't seen that monsoonal moisture very widespread the last two weekends in the county" that was forecast, Johnston said. "Some areas have gotten some rain, but some haven't. ... We're just seeing an uneven amount of precipitation in the area."

A fire burning in northern Larimer County near Halligan Reservoir — which started from lightning Monday night — is also a concern as the fire danger rises, Johnston said. As of about noon Tuesday, the fire was about 125 acres with no reported containment.

The fire restrictions approved Tuesday apply only to unincorporated Larimer County, which is outside any city limits.
