The third richest man in the world's primary residency is worth less than a Tesla car after Elon Musk sold off his last mansion for $30million (£25m)

For a man who is pioneering space technology, you’d think billionaire Elon Musk’s property portfolio would be out of this world.

Yet, in spite of his worth being over $230billion (£192bn), Musk lives in a prefab, towable home valued at $50,000 (£42,000).

Remarkably, this is less than the price of a Tesla X car which is $80,000 (£67,000) - for the third richest man in the world, that is pretty exceptional.

In June 2021, the SpaceX and Tesla CEO revealed on Twitter that he had sold his multiple properties in exchange for owning only one home in California, which he uses to host business events.

According to Futurism , he sold off his last mansion for $30million (£25m).

Since December 2021, Musk's new primary residency is a tiny home on Boca Chica/Starbase in Texas which he rents from SpaceX.

In a tweet last year, Musk said: “My primary home is literally a $50,000 house in Boca Chica / Starbase that I rent from SpaceX. It’s kinda awesome though.”

According to Teslarati, the team received an anonymous tip off that Musk is in fact living in a Casita home made by the company Boxabl.

Boxabl is a US tech start-up that plans to revolutionise construction by designing sustainable homes that are pre-made on a factory assembly line, transported as a shippable box and then unfolded into a home.

In other words, it is a flat-pack home that comes ready-made, is transported as an eight foot wide container, and assembled easily at its desired location.

Boxabl’s website states that the prefabricated Casita, translating to cottage or little house in Spanish, can be purchased for as low as $49,500 (£41,000) or rented for as low as $250 (£210) per month.

It is essentially a studio apartment at 375 square feet.

The single, open plan room is just about big enough to fit a living area, a bedroom area, an eat-in kitchen, and one bathroom, as well as full appliances, including a washer and dryer.

Boxabl claims that the Casita is “extremely energy efficient” as it is installed with the latest insulation technology and uses LED lighting.

Back in November of 2020, Boxabl dropped some hints that Musk might be a buyer of one of its houses.

Teslarati says the company mentioned a "very special client in Boca Chica — one that preferred to have a Falcon 9 poster on the unit’s door".

In March 2021, World of Engineering sent out a tweet with a video, which specifically referenced the popular CEO.

Another hint that there may be a connection is the appearance of Tesla in one of Boxabl’s promotional videos.

A Casita model home is being towed by a Tesla Model X.

However, the company disclaimed that the required 12,000 pound towing capacity would actually require a Tesla Cybertruck.

If the rumours are true, as the evidence suggests, then incredibly, Elon Musk lives in a home smaller and cheaper than many.

While the Casita could certainly accommodate one, the next question is whether Musk resides there with his partner Grimes and their one year old son, named X Æ A-Xii.

Not to mention, whether he hosts the full family of eight when he shares custody of his five children with his first wife Justine Wilson — twin boys born in 2004, and triplet boys born in 2006.

Fitting the whole family would be taking what is already impressive to the next level.
