100 Years Ago – 1922: Acting Detective Sergeant MacNeal and a squad of officers conducted a successful raid at 303 Hayes St., an alleged gambling resort, Saturday night, and took into custody the proprietor, Abram Rosenberg, aged 37 years, of 2700 W. Third St., and four inmates, at least a dozen, according to the police, escaping by a rear entrance when the police entered. Poker tables were found in three rooms, with card hands, which presumably had just been dealt at the time the police arrived, lying on them. Rosenberg was fined $50 and costs. Thomas F. Quinn, 28, of 25th Street and Sunnyside Avenue, who proved he had entered the place to make a purchase of cigarettes, was discharged. The other three were each assessed $5 and costs.
75 Years Ago – 1947: A police chase starting in Media Wednesday night ended when the pursued car overturned on Rose Valley Road, resulting in the death of one occupant. A second occupant of the car was critically injured, but the third confounded police and ambulance attendants by escaping from the ambulance after being strapped, unconscious, to a stretcher. The youth was later found at Chester Hospital.
50 Years Ago – 1972: At 4 p.m. Sunday from the bell tower of Nativity Blessed Virgin Mary Roman Catholic Church, it looked like a sea of umbrellas down in the street. The crowd had come to see the elaborate wedding arranged by Silvio F. (Babe) D’Ignazio, owner of the Towne House restaurant, for the marriage of the and his wife’s only daughter, Elizabeth Ann (Lisa), 20, to John Andrew Carnie, 21, an Ottowa journalism student of Scottish descent. D’Ignazio called off some of the gala preparations, such as transportation of the bridal party in antique horse-drawn coaches, because of the rain.
25 Years Ago – 1997: A contractor milling Route 291 in Ridley Township yesterday morning hit an underground 12-inch steel gas main, causing a high-pressure gas leak that closed the highway for nearly two hours. No injuries were reported and no evacuation of the nearby Boeing Helicopters plant was necessary.
10 Years Ago – 2012: An alleged madam and alleged prostitute were arraigned Friday after Upper Darby police raided their place of business in the Aronimink section of the township. “They rented the place on State and Stanbridge roads May 1 and set up business,” police Superintendent Michael Chitwood said. “They built up a fairly significant trade. We got calls from neighbors about the numerous males entering the building with a turnaround time of about 20 minutes.”
